Transracial Families of the NC Triangle is a collection of families parenting transracially through foster care and adoption in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area of North Carolina.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide a support and educational network for transracial families –both for the parents and transracially adopted and fostered children. This includes supporting the families through the unique challenges of transracial parenting and nurturing the children’s positive racial identity by education and celebration of racial heritage and cultural diversity.

Our Members

Our current member families range from those who have been parenting transracially for a number of years (13 years in one case), those who have recently adopted, those who are waiting to adopt transracially, blended (both birth children and transracially adopted children) families, to single parent families. The children within the group so far are African American, Haitian, Hispanic and Biracial, and range in age from babies to teenagers.

Our Member Services

We plan to offer a range of services to our members:

  • holding monthly meetings to provide opportunities for networking and education;
  • offering a lending library of materials related to transracial families;
  • hosting social events for the families with educational/cultural activities for the children;
  • offering an online discussion forum to families to raise issues and share experiences;
  • maintaining a list of local resources (e.g., names and numbers of non-Caucasian professional services – Doctors, Dentists, Therapists etc in the area);
  • providing easy access to other appropriate transracial parenting web resources.
