Dr. Alan W. Brown

IBM Distinguished Engineer
Rational Tool Strategy

Adjunct Professor
NC State University

Alan W. Brown is an IBM Distinguished Engineer at IBM Rational software, and an Adjunct Professor at NC State University. Alan is responsible for product strategy for IBM Rational's design and construction tools. Alan's specific focus is Model Driven Development (MDD) products. In this capacity he defines strategy and consults on release of products aimed at improving software development efficiency through visual modeling, generating code from abstract models, and systematic reuse. This involves working with engineering teams on product architecture, product management groups on creating release plans, and marketing and field teams on positioning  IBM Rational's products and services. Since the acquisition of Rational in February 2003, Alan has broadened his influence by taking a leadership role in defining a common architecture and strategic direction for the Rational Desktop tools, WebSphere Studio, and WebSphere Business Integration tools. Additionally, Alan plays a number of important roles in the broader IBM community most notably as an active member of the IBM Software Group Architectural Board, a key contributor and representative on the IBM Academic Initiative, and Rational's representative editor for the IBM Press.

In April 2006 Alan was also appointed as Adjunct Professor at NC State University. In this role Alan is acting as advisor to computer science faculty and students on software engineering topics, is a co-founder of NC State's Center for Open Software Engineering (COSE), and is assisting in the revision of software engineering curricula.

Alan came to Rational in February 2001 through Rational's purchase of Catapulse Inc., a Silicon Valley start up funded by Rational Corp. and Benchmark Capital. Previously Alan was VP of R&D for Computer Associate's Application Development products where he was responsible for advanced technology activities across the group. He advised on specifications for new software products and the future direction of enterprise application and component-based software development products across the company.

Working within the application development industry for over 15 years, Alan was previously with Sterling Software, and Texas Instruments Software where he was director of software research  investigating advanced research and development products.

Alan also spent spent five years at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. There he led the CASE environments project advising on a variety of U.S. government agencies and contractors on the application and integration of CASE technologies. Alan attained the highest technical ranking at the SEI, Rank A, based on technical standing, international reputation and influence in the community.

Alan's primary interests are in component-based development, software engineering environments, and enterprise application development tools. He has published over 50 papers, edited three books and is the author of four books, including "Object-Oriented Databases: Applications in Software Engineering" and "Database Support for Software Engineering." His most recent book, "Large-scale Component-Based Development" was published by Prentice-Hall.

Alan holds a doctorate degree in computing science from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK and a bachelor’s degree in computational science from the University of Hull, UK.
